Sounion, Temple of Poseidon, 1984. When ancient Athenians rounded the rocky promontory of Cape Sounion, crowned by the temple of Poseidon, god of the sea, they knew they were safely home and protected under the aegis of Athena and her uncle Poseidon. The Doric temple dates to circa 444 BC. Byron carved his name on the porch, and also wrote “Place me on Sunium’s marbled steep, where nothing save the waves and I, may hear our mutual murmurs sweep . . .”
