Eleusis, Site of the Mysteries, 2006. Eleusis was the site of an annual initiation ceremony for the cult of Demeter and Persephone. The initiates walked in a procession from Athens, following the “Sacred Way” to Eleusis. The actual initiation ceremony took place at night in a great hall called the Telesterion (the square building below the center of the photograph). Many prominent people in the ancient Greek and Roman world were initiated, and all participants were sworn to secrecy regarding the ceremony. Today the site is surrounded by a modern town and heavy industry.
