Trelleborg near Slagelse, Denmark, 1995. This fortified Viking settlement has a circular castle 450 feet in diameter, divided into four squares each with four long houses. The rampart is 16 feet high and bounded by a dry moat on the east (left). Outside the circle are another 15 long houses, all oriented toward the center. At lower left is a cemetery. The castle was built in AD 980.
