Monemvasia, Greece, 2006. Monemvasia is a small island off the eastern Peloponnesus with a walled Byzantine town (the name means “one entrance”). The island is about 1000 feet high and resembles Gibraltar. The top of the rock has an older fortified town, now almost entirely in ruins. Monemvasia was once famous for the export of Malvasia wine (or Malmsey), which was named after it.
