Itanos, 2008. Crete. copyright photographer Marilyn Bridges.

Itanos, 2008. From early Classical through Byzantine times, Itanos was an important commercial port city at the northeast corner of Crete. It was supported by fishing and by trade in dyes from shellfish. During the Hellenistic period, the Ptolemaic dynasty in Egypt established a garrison and naval base at Itanos. The city survived a serious earthquake in AD 795 and later attacks by Arab raiders until it was final abandoned in the 15th century. The photograph looks toward the south, showing a headland between two harbor beaches.
