Colossi of Memnon, West Bank, Thebes, 1993. These regal colossi stood guard at the entrance to a huge mortuary temple of Amenophis III (1391 – 1353 BC) long reduced to a faint trace behind the statues. The statues were carved from hard yellow-brown quartzite and represent the king seated on a throne. They reach 64 feet in height and are 20 feet across the shoulders. The weight of one statue alone (without its base) is estmated to be 800 tons.
