Maiden Castle, Dorset, 1985. The largest hill fort in Britain, Maiden Castle covers an area of 120 acres. The fort was begun in circa 350 BC and completed circa 60 BC. Despite its elaborate ramparts, the fort was overrun by Roman legions under Vespasian in AD 43.
