Stonehenge, Wiltshire, 1985. Probably the most famous megalithic structure in the world, Stonehenge is believed to have been built in stages between 2800 and 1550 BC (although some theories would date it 1000 years earlier). It was apparently a multi-purpose construction, with lunar and solar observations relating to seasonal events of primary importance. It also served as a place of burial and probably as a central ceremonial complex for observation of the equinox and solstice. The Druids’ association with Stonehenge is speculative, and if true at all, certainly occurred late in its history, as they do not appear in Britain before 250 BC.
