Winterhaven Stick Man, California, 1983. The “stickman” is an 80-foot intaglio with the shape of its legs lightly tamped in. Local Indian groups suggested that it represents Kwa-You, a demon that stalked the lower Colorado Basin, yet its resemblance to Hopi kachina motifs is unmistakable. The figure might be Mohave or Cocopah in origin and probably dates to the 15th century or earlier. Below the stickman is a probable healing site in the form of an intaglio interwoven cross, whose four arms correspond to the four cardinal directions.
